Shawnee Song Transcriptions

SHAWNEE SONG CYLINDERS were collected by C. F. and E. W. Voegelin at Shawnee, Oklahoma in December, 1935.

Copies of the materials were provided to me by Voegelin that included two xerox copies of most pages of the transcription and a carbon copy and xerox of the index pages. A note on the carbon copy of the index pages has a note in the upper right hand corner:  "Orig. to Geo. Herzog. Carbon to CFV [Charles F. Vogelin]. 2/2251 F195 [nearly illegible] pre 54-181-F" A note on the final two sheets have the notation "Shawnee Songs from the Voegelin Collection at the Archives of Fok and Primitive Music, Department of Anthropology, Indiana University" along with "Transcribed by Bruno Nettl" apparently in 1951.  I have forwarded a copy of the materials on these pages to the Archives of Traditional Music which now houses the Voegelin Collection.  Scanned in December, 2002 by Noel Schutz.

   Four index pages (each stabled with a Xerox plus a carbon copy.

2.  Song Transcriptions
   24 pages of transcribed words to Shawnee songs with interlinear
   translation.

3.  Musical Notations.
   Copies of music sheets (apparently copied from a single
   large sheet) with notes for Lullaby (50c) [221.30-34]; Song from
  Winter Story (49d) [221.24-29], Pumkin Dance Song (4) [218.3.4],
  Green Corn Dance Song (30) [219.6, 87], and Peyote Cult Song
  (52a) [221.37].

4.   Story Transcriptions.
   "Fox Woman Story," "Goose Story," and "Deer Story" for Cylinder
   Number 49.  Recorded in 1952 by B. Netl, sung by Mary Williams.

NOTES

Songs 1 a) and b) are marked "missing" (presumably the cylinders are meant.

No. 3 has a not "Bread dance; men's dance."

No. 44 = "Missing."

Note: No. 49, song by a) JeCe, c) JeCe, and 3) JeCe: "not audible."

Note: No. 50, song by a) JeCe "not audible."
